There are some definite signs that is it probably time for a Re-Thatch.

But do not worry - We will not just Re-Thatch your Bali Hut but also make sure we leave the bad practices behind, The biggest one is mudbugs on skewer, Will leave that one for the BBQ.

E) Dark spots from water penetration is clearly visible from the inside of the Bali Hut. The Thatch has clearly been damage by vegetation or simply just time in the weather. The Thatch on those areas is too thin to divert the rain water.

Signs inside the Bali Hut telling us more.

F) Seeing the stars form the inside of your Bali Hut is a clear signal that is is time. This massive deuteriation on the ridge also tell us that the previous Thatching Company  did not build the ridge up properly. The ridge should not be exposed like this even if the hips are exposed.

It could also be That they did not install a proper ridge capping on the ridge.

G) The Mudbugs no longer cover the hips. Can create more damage on the long run if not properly taken care off.

H) Discolouring close to the hips. Most times it is because the mudbugs is installed on the skewer. In this case however it is clearly old age.

Signs from the out side of the Bali Hut telling us more.

i) The Thatch under the ridge has shorten considerably over time.

The ridge is now also not covering the tip of the mudbugs on the hips.

J) The top of some of the mudbugs is now clearly visible.  Thatch shortens over the years and its perfectly normal.

K) The fold is clearly visible over the entire flat areas of the roof. The fold is where the Thatch is folded over the bamboo spine when the thatching strips are handmade.

L) The faceplate or ring beam is clearly visible from the outside.

M) Thatch covering the Top of the Mudbugs are deteriorated and no longer cover the top of the Mudbugs and struggle to support the Finials.

N) Cable ties holding the mudbugs in place no longer do its job. The mudbugs are falling apart. By the way - Never use cable ties to fix the Mudbugs in place. The plastic get brittle after a few summers and looses it holding ability.

O) The fold is clearly visible. Probably the most obvious sign that it is time for a Re-Thatch, even if there are no sunlight visible from the inside of the Bali hut.

P) The ring beam is visible, Thatch overhang has shorten from 600mm to 300mm

Mudbugs on a Stick Tied with Cable Ties Trick.

Q) Probably the worse practice other professional thatching companies make is the practice of pre-fixing the mudbugs on a skewer with cable ties to save time on the installation. This leads to premature water damage to the Bail Hut. The Cable Ties get brittle over a few years and loose the ability to hold the Mudbugs in place, Thus reducing the waterproofing and water damage the  ends of the thatch coming together at the hips

R) Is the results of Mudbugs falling apart and allowing water to damage the Thatch joining at the Hips.

S) S is a further result of the bad Mudbug on a stick practice. The Mudbugs on a stick  comes together very clumsy at the ridge. The ridge will collapse after a short time and again allow water to penetrate to deep in the layers of the Thatch...

Don't allow any Thatching Company to take any shortcuts by installing the hip covering Mudbugs on a stick.
